Human Design Glossary
The terms and mechanics of Human Design in short, plain definitions. The Types, Authorities, Centers, Lines and Profiles have their own pages in the Knowledge Base, and every gate and channel has its own page too.
Foundations
- Aura
- The energy field that surrounds and interacts with others. Each Type has a distinct aura - open and enveloping, focused and absorbing, closed and repelling, or resistant and sampling - that shapes how you affect and are affected by people.
- Bodygraph
- The body-shaped chart of your design. The central diagram of Human Design: nine centers connected by 36 channels and 64 gates. Defined (colored) parts are consistent in you; open (white) parts are where you take in and amplify the world.
- Choicelessness
- Letting life unfold through correct interaction. Living by Strategy and Authority rather than the mind's control. You observe what life brings instead of forcing outcomes - and you wake up.
- Conditioning
- Energy absorbed from the world around you. The way your open centers take in and amplify others' energy, slowly shaping you into someone you are not. Recognising it is the first step of deconditioning.
- Deconditioning
- Unwinding years of borrowed behavior. The multi-year process of releasing the patterns absorbed through your open centers and learning to trust your own Strategy and Authority. Often said to take around seven years.
- Design
- The unconscious body - red in the chart. Calculated from roughly 88 days before birth (88° of solar arc). It represents your unconscious, genetic, bodily self - traits others see in you before you do.
- Human Design
- A system that maps how you are energetically wired. A synthesis of the I Ching, astrology, the Kabbalah, the chakra system and modern physics, introduced by Ra Uru Hu in 1987. It produces a personal "blueprint" from your exact birth time that describes how you are built to make decisions and meet the world.
- Keynote
- A word or phrase that holds a whole theme. The compressed language of Human Design - a single keyword (e.g. a gate's "Drive") that speaks directly to the body and unlocks layers of meaning.
- Living Your Design
- The lived experiment, not a belief. Human Design is meant to be tested, not believed. You live by your Strategy and Authority and watch what happens - your own experience is the only proof that matters.
- Not-Self
- Living from conditioning instead of your design. The state of being run by your open centers and the mind rather than your Strategy and Authority. Each Type has a Not-Self theme (frustration, bitterness, anger, disappointment) that signals you are off track.
- Not-Self Themes
- The four signals you are off track. Frustration (Generators), Bitterness (Projectors), Anger (Manifestors) and Disappointment (Reflectors) - emotional flags that you are living from conditioning rather than your design.
- Personality
- The conscious "you" - black in the chart. Calculated from your exact moment of birth. It represents your conscious mind - who you think you are, the part you can talk about and identify with.
- Quantum
- A whole greater than the sum of its parts. A channel made of two gates becomes something new - neither gate alone. The conscious and unconscious held together as "you" is the great quantum of your design.
- Ra Uru Hu
- The founder of Human Design. Born Robert Allan Krakower, Ra Uru Hu received and synthesised the Human Design System over eight days in Ibiza in 1987. He spent the rest of his life teaching it until his death in 2011.
- Resistance
- The friction of going against your design. What you meet when you act from the mind instead of your Strategy and Authority. Following your design is what dissolves it.
- Science of Differentiation
- Human Design's own name for itself. A way of seeing each person as utterly unique - and a practice you verify through your own experiment, not a belief you adopt.
- Senders & Receivers
- How you broadcast and absorb energy. Defined parts of you are senders - you radiate them consistently and condition others. Open parts are receivers - they take in and amplify the world around you.
- Signature
- The feeling of living correctly. The reward of following your Strategy and Authority: Satisfaction (Generators), Success (Projectors), Peace (Manifestors) or Surprise (Reflectors).
- Strategy & Authority
- The core experiment of Human Design. Living by your Type's Strategy and your Inner Authority is the heart of the practice. Followed over time, it dissolves resistance and aligns your life with your true nature.
- The Mind
- A brilliant tool, a poor decision-maker. Your inner and outer awareness - meant to think, share and advise others, not to run your life. Decisions belong to your body's Authority, not the mind.
- The Voice
- The source of the original transmission. The name Ra Uru Hu gave to the mystical voice that dictated the Human Design System to him over eight days and nights in 1987.
- True Self
- You, free of conditioning. The differentiated identity that lives from its own Strategy and Authority - surrendered to the mechanics of its design rather than driven by the mind.
Decision-Making
- Informing
- The Manifestor's courtesy. Telling the people who will be affected before you act. It does not ask permission - it clears the path and softens the resistance a closed aura creates.
- Inner Authority
- Your reliable body-based decision compass. The part of you that knows what is correct - Emotional, Sacral, Splenic, Ego or Self-Projected. Some Projectors have no inner authority and use a sounding board over time; Reflectors use the lunar cycle. It is felt in the body, not reasoned by the mind.
- Invitation
- The Projector's way in. Recognition and a formal invitation for the big things - love, work, place. Projectors who wait for it meet success; those who push meet resistance.
- Response
- The Generator's way in. Life shows up - a question, a person, a thing - and the Sacral answers with a gut sound or pull. Generators are built to respond, not to initiate from the mind.
- Strategy
- How your Type is meant to engage life. The entry point that reduces resistance: respond (Generators), wait for the invitation (Projectors), inform (Manifestors), or wait a lunar cycle (Reflectors).
The Bodygraph
- Awareness Centers
- The three centers of awareness. The Ajna (mental certainty), Spleen (instinct, in the now) and Solar Plexus (emotional clarity over time) - the three ways consciousness becomes aware.
- Circuitry
- The three energy networks of the chart. Individual (mutation, empowerment), Tribal (support, resources, family) and Collective (sharing, patterns and logic). Each channel belongs to a circuit with its own flavor.
- Color, Tone & Base
- The deeper layers beneath gate and line. Each activation has a gate, a line, and then finer layers: Color (6), Tone (6) and Base (5). These drive your Variables (the four arrows) and your advanced wiring.
- Defined
- A consistent, reliable part of you. A center is defined (colored) when a complete channel connects it to another. Defined energy is fixed - you can rely on it and you radiate it to others.
- Definition
- How your defined centers connect. Single, Split, Triple Split or Quadruple Split - describing how many separate groups your defined centers form. It speaks to how you process and where you look for connection.
- Geometry
- The angle of your life's trajectory. Set by your Incarnation Cross: Right Angle (personal destiny, self-absorbed process), Left Angle (transpersonal, lived through others) or Juxtaposition (a fixed, fated life).
- Incarnation Cross
- Your overarching life theme. Formed by your conscious and unconscious Sun and Earth gates - about 70% of your purpose. It names the broad theme your life is here to express.
- Motor Centers
- The four engines of the chart. The Sacral, Heart/Ego, Solar Plexus and Root - the centers that generate energy. Connected to the Throat, a motor gives manifesting power.
- Open
- White center with no gates at all. A center with no complete channel AND no activated gates. It takes in the energy of others completely unfiltered - the deepest openness in the chart, with the widest range between wisdom and conditioning. Not the same as Undefined, which still carries activated gates.
- Planetary Activations
- Where each planet was at your two moments. The 13 planetary positions at your birth (Personality) and ~88 days before (Design) that light up the gates and lines of your chart. The raw data of your design.
- Pressure Centers
- The two centers that push. The Head (mental pressure to make sense of things) and the Root (physical pressure to act). Together they bookend the chart and drive it.
- Quarter
- One of the four quarters of the wheel. The Mandala divides into four Quarters - Initiation (mind), Civilization (form), Duality (bonding) and Mutation (transformation). Your Personality Sun's quarter names how your purpose is fulfilled.
- Rave Mandala
- The zodiac wheel of your activations. The outer wheel that maps the 64 gates onto the 12 zodiac signs and shows where each planet was at your birth and design moment.
- Undefined
- White center with activated gates. A center with no complete channel, but WITH one or more activated (hanging) gates. It samples and amplifies the energy of others, and the activated gates give the conditioning a consistent flavor - a source of wisdom when lived consciously.
Gates & Channels
- Abstract
- The backward-looking Collective stream. One half of the Collective circuit - experience, memory and story that make sense of life by looking back at what has been. The opposite process to Logic.
- Bridging Gate
- A gate that joins a split definition. In a Split definition, the gate that would connect the two separate groups into one. It marks what you unconsciously look for in others to feel whole.
- Channel
- Two gates joined into a defined trait. A complete connection between two gates (and the centers they sit on). The 36 channels define centers and give you consistent, reliable qualities.
- Circuit
- A family of channels with a shared theme. Channels group into circuits - Individual (empowering mutation), Tribal (support and resources) and Collective (sharing, logic and abstraction). The circuit colors how a channel expresses.
- Dormant Gate
- A lone gate in an open center. An activated gate sitting alone in an undefined center, quietly open to completion by another person's harmonic gate or by a transit.
- Exaltation & Detriment
- The bright and shadow side of a line. Each line of a gate has an exaltation (its gift, ⊕) and a detriment (its challenge, ⊖), set by the planet that activates it. Two faces of the same theme.
- Format Energies
- Root–Sacral channels that color a whole circuit. Powerful channels between the Root and Sacral (e.g. 53-42, 60-3, 52-9) whose rhythm sets the tone for every other channel in their circuit.
- Gate
- One of the 64 hexagrams in the chart. Each of the 64 gates corresponds to an I Ching hexagram and sits at a specific spot on a center. An activated gate is a specific theme you carry.
- Hanging Gate
- Half a channel - one gate without its partner. An activated gate whose partner gate is not active. It seeks completion and is often drawn to people who carry the other half.
- Harmonic Gate
- The gate that completes a hanging gate. The partner gate at the other end of a channel. When you carry a hanging gate, you are drawn toward people who hold its harmonic - together you light up the whole channel.
- Harmony, Resonance & Dissonance
- How two lines relate. In hexagram theory, lines harmonise (1/4, 2/5, 3/6), resonate (same line, e.g. 2/2) or are dissonant (e.g. 1/6) - the basis of profile and relationship dynamics.
- Hexagram
- A six-line figure from the I Ching. Each of the 64 gates is an I Ching hexagram - six stacked lines (the six lines of the gate). The hexagrams are the genetic alphabet of Human Design.
- Integration Channels
- The self-empowerment cluster. Four channels (1-8, 2-14, 7-31, 13-33 sharing gates 34-20, 10-57, etc.) that form the core of individuation - the energy of standing on your own.
- Line (of a gate)
- The 1–6 nuance within a gate. Each gate has six lines, each a different flavor of its theme - from the foundation (line 1) to the role model (line 6).
- Logic
- The forward-looking Collective stream. One half of the Collective circuit - patterns, formulas and proof that look to the future and provide reliable structure. The opposite process to the Abstract.
Variables
- Determination (Digestion)
- How your body is best fed. From the Design Sun color - the way of eating (e.g. consistent, alternating, calm, nervous) that lets your body and mind work best.
- Environment
- Where you thrive. From the Design Nodes color - the kind of place and setting in which your body feels correct and supported.
- Motivation
- What drives your mind. From the Personality Sun color - the underlying motivation (hope, desire, need, guilt, innocence or fear) behind how your mind engages life.
- Perspective
- How your mind sees the world. From the Personality Nodes color - the lens or view through which you naturally perceive and make sense of things.
- Variables (PHS)
- The four arrows - your advanced wiring. Primary Health System: four arrows derived from the color and tone of your design and personality Sun and Nodes, pointing left or right. They fine-tune how you eat, where you thrive, what motivates you and how you perceive.
Cosmology & Physics
- Crystals of Consciousness
- The two crystals every form carries. In Ra's cosmology, each being holds a Personality Crystal (consciousness) and a Design Crystal (the body), held together in the form by the Magnetic Monopole.
- Driver & Passenger
- Who steers the vehicle. In the cosmology, the Magnetic Monopole is the Driver that knows the trajectory; the personality is meant to be the Passenger, witnessing the ride rather than gripping the wheel.
- Fractal
- The line of connection between people. Lines of belonging that trace back to the beginning, creating a sense of familiarity and recognition between certain people who share the same fractal.
- Godhead
- The mind's default "program", set by your Personality Sun. One of the 16 archetypal "faces" of the mandala, each ruling four gates that share the same chemistry. Your Godhead is set by your Personality Sun and colors the themes your mind is wired to treat as important - a kind of default setting for the mental program. It is understood as a not-self sign-post: the point is not to live your Godhead but to notice its themes passing through your mind, and to keep deciding by your Strategy and Authority rather than the program. (Advanced / Rave Cosmology.)
- I Ching
- The Chinese Book of Changes - the gate map. The 64 hexagrams of the I Ching map exactly onto the 64 gates and onto the 64 codons of human DNA - one of the four pillars Human Design is built on.
- Magnetic Monopole
- What holds you together and pulls you forward. Seated in the G Center, the monopole gives the illusion of a separate self and magnetically draws to you the people and places of your path.
- Neutrino
- The tiny particle that carries the imprint. Near-massless particles streaming through everything from the stars. In Human Design, the neutrino stream passing through the planets imprints you at birth - the mechanism behind your chart.
- The Four Pillars
- The traditions Human Design synthesises. The I Ching, astrology, the Hindu-Brahmin chakra system and the Kabbalah's Tree of Life - woven together with quantum physics into one map.
- Vehicle
- The body that carries the personality. The Design side of the chart - your one-of-a-kind genetic body, the vehicle that carries your conscious personality through this life.
- Yin / Yang
- The duality everything is built on. The complementary opposites - receptive and active, broken line and solid line - whose interplay forms the hexagrams and the whole of Human Design.
Cycles & Transits
- Chiron
- The wounded-healer point. A minor body shown faintly in the chart, associated with where you carry a wound that becomes a source of healing and wisdom for others.
- Chiron Return
- The ~50-year flowering of purpose. When Chiron returns to its birth position (around ages 48–52), inviting the final maturing and full expression of your life's purpose.
- Ephemeris
- The table of where the planets are. Astronomical positions of the Sun, planets and Nodes over time. It powers transit work - and our own 48-hour ephemeris in Neutrino Weather.
- Lunar Cycle
- The ~28-day Moon cycle. The Moon's journey through all 64 gates over about 28 days - the decision-making timeframe for Reflectors, who sample the whole cycle before clarity arrives.
- Lunar Nodes
- The North and South Nodes - your trajectory. Not bodies but mathematical points where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic. In your chart they shape your environment, perspective and the arc of your life's direction.
- Saturn Return
- The ~29-year reckoning. When Saturn returns to its birth position (around ages 29–30 and 58–59), life pressures you to get real and grow into who you actually are.
- Solar Return
- Your yearly cycle. Each year as the Sun returns to its birth position - a forecast of the themes, lessons and connections of the year ahead.
- Transit
- Where the planets are right now. The live positions of the planets, which activate gates in the sky each day and color the collective weather - and temporarily connect with your chart. The basis of our Neutrino Weather.
- Uranus Opposition
- The mid-life awakening (~40). Around ages 38–42, Uranus opposes its birth position - the classic mid-life turning point that pushes you toward your true, individual path.
Relationships
- Companionship
- You share the same gate or channel. Both people carry the same definition - the easy, familiar ground of friendship and shared experience, because you simply see the world the same way there.
- Composite Chart
- Two charts overlaid as one. A partner analysis that lays two bodygraphs together to reveal what each person defines in the other, where you electromagnetically attract, and where you compromise.
- Compromise
- One has the channel, the other one gate. When one partner defines a whole channel and the other only one of its gates, the partial one is pulled into the other's way of being there.
- Dominance
- One defines a channel the other doesn't touch. One partner fully defines a channel while the other has neither gate - the undefined partner can only receive and surrender to that energy.
- Electromagnetics
- The pull of opposites in a channel. When one person carries one gate of a channel and the other carries its partner gate, the channel completes between them - a magnetic attraction and the spark of a relationship.
- Penta
- The energy field of a small group. A group analysis (3–5 people) treating a team or family as one operating organism, revealing its strengths, gaps and group dynamics.
